| Recent Minnesota Design Team Visit: La Crescent, MN -- September 11-13, 2008
LaCrescent is located near I-90 and across the river from La Crosse, Wisconsin. Parks and trails design, main street revitalization and urban design, and "front-door" infill development along the new MnDOT interchange were some of the design challenges. "Connections" was one of the key themes.
Recent Minnesota Design Team Visit: Gaylord, MN -- September 4-6, 2008
Gaylord (pop. 2,300) is a gem on the prairie. The city is complete with a nice downtown, a mix of well-kept housing, a growing Hispanic population, and everything within walking distance. Efforts to site key public facilities, influence MnDOT's Main Street road design, plan the trail system, improve lake water quality, identify and preserve historic buildings, and find its economic niche in the region were some of the topics addressed.
Recent Minnesota Design Team Visit: LeRoy, MN -- April 10-12 2008
LeRoy, a city of 925 people, is located 25 miles southeast of Austin on the MN/IA border. It has retained its small town atmosphere, and still has basic businesses, services, and institutions. In order to help the community sustain the desirable quality of life that presently exists, the MDT will likely explore strategies for how LeRoy’s downtown can become a destination, how the city can tap into flourishing regional tourism and recreation amenities, and how its citizens can unify around a common vision for future development.
Recent Minnesota Design Team Visit: Staples, MN -- April 3-5, 2008
Staples is a town of 3,100 located 25 miles west of Brainerd. Like many MDT visits, this visit will focus on building strong physical spaces, on wiser, more sustainable resource use, and on opportunities to reinvigorate main street following MN Hwy 10 relocation away from downtown. Other challenges include addressing the loss of cross-generational connections, and fostering a sense of pride and willingness for community investment in the next generation of leaders. Come to be a part of an MDT weekend that will define a physical vision for the city and help restore the sense of community pride that will invigorate the social character of Staples.
